Dow University to hold International Symposium on Ramadan and Health

KARACHI, Oct 10 (APP): The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS)
will host an international symposium on "Ramadan and Health," here from
October 25 to 26 with the aim to share studies conducted by international
and national researchers about effect of fasting on human health.
DUHS' Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. Umer Farooq, Director,
National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Prof. Zaman Shaikh,
Principal, Dow International Medical College, Prof. Muhammad Masroor,
and Director, Research Department DUHS Dr. Nazeer Shaikh, in a press
conference on Thursday said the symposium would be the first of its
kind in Pakistan.
They mentioned that four conferences on this subject have been
held previously in different parts of the world and DUHS' would
the fifth of the series.
The most striking findings of researchers will be shared with
both scientific and general audience in the form of state of art and
plenary lectures, free papers and posters.
Prof. Umer Farooq invited speakers from across the globe
to attend the moot and they comprise those who have conducted
several researches examining the effects of fasting on human health
particularly metabolic outcomes.
Similarly, national speakers from nearly all corners of the
country are also invited to participate and present their work on this
international event, he said.
Prof. Zaman Shaikh said the international symposium will be graced
by Prof. Jasem Ramada, Prof Mohsen, Prof Javaid Akram, Prof A.H.
Amir, Prof. Yaqoob Ahmadani, Prof. Najam-ul-Islam, Prof. Faisal
Qureshi, Dr. Khadija and Dr. Shabeen Naz Masood and others.
The speakers will be sharing their findings on a variety of
health related issues vis- a- vis Ramadan- related fasting
practices in the Muslim world, fasting and feasting in Ramadan,
physical activity during Ramadan, management of hypertension and
diabetes mellitus during Ramadan besides different commonly occurring
health issues among those fasting in the holy month.
