Experts for creating awareness about climate change

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16 (APP): Agriculture experts Monday urged for
establishing close links among academia, farmers and scientists to create
awareness about climate change and its effects on crops.
Addressing a one-day conference on "Developing Community Based
Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in Barani Areas" here, Director
General National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan said due to the climate change, agriculture sector was badly affected and resulted in decreased agri production as well as farmers' income.
The event was organized by Lok Sanjh Foundation with an aim to
create awareness among the farming community about the climate change and its aftermath on crops and farmers income.
He appreciated the efforts of Lok Sanjh Foundation for arranging scuh
forum for farmers to dialogue with scientists, agri-experts and academia for
solution of their problems.
He said farmers were more resilience for adaptation of climate change. There is a need to establish close linkage among all the stakeholders to boost up agricultural production and food security in the country he added.
Dr. Azeem highlighted various projects in the agriculture sector and briefed the farming community about development and progress of these programmes.
The DG NARC said that Pakistan was rich in natural resources and
there was a need to develop comprehensive strategy for increasing area under cultivation to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture production.
Executive Director, Lok Sanjh Foundation, Dr. Farzana Shahid highlighted various aspects of climate change and explained climate change effects on farmers' particularly small farmers.
She urged the experts to devise domestic food production system and
initiating welfare programmes for the farming community to boost agri sector
and national economy.
She said LSF takes every steps to appraise the farming community about
climate change adaptation.
She further said that climate change is a major challenge for scientists, policy makers and farming community of the country.
