Extortion spreads to Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Sept 17 (Online): The menace of extortion is on the rise in the federal capital and the issue was raised during the meeting of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Interior.
According to media reports, during the meeting, Senator Najma Hameed revealed that people she knew had received extortion calls and they had agreed to pay Rs30 million. She added that the people receiving threats had fled from Islamabad to Dubai.
The senator added that she had informed the Inspector General Police (IGP) Islamabad who did not reply. IGP Islamabad was present during this meeting and said that the calls were made from a number in Afghanistan and the police could only provide protection to those being threatened.
During the investigation of the Lahore train attack it revealed that the private operator had also received extortion calls from Afghanistan.
