Providing inexpensive medical facilities to people, obligation of govt: SC

ISLAMABAD, Sept 19 (Online): Supreme Court (SC) has remarked that providing inexpensive medical facilities is responsibility of state and no negligence can be tolerated in this regard.

A 2-member bench of SC headed by Justice Tassadaq Hussain Jillani took up for hearing suo motu case on sale of medicines at higher rate Thursday.

Justice Tassadaq Hussain Jillani remarked “earlier the food items were expensive for the people and now the rising prices of medicines has made medical treatment difficult for them. The court be informed about the names of pharmaceutical companies found involved in selling the medicines at higher rate.

Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Sajid Bhatti told the court the pharmaceutical companies manufacturing life saving medicine are selling them at excessive rate ranging between 46 percent to 471 percent. .

The court inquired from DAG if the list of such pharmaceutical companies were available which were selling the medicines at higher rate.

Sajid Bhatti told the court no such list was available.

The court directed him to file the names and the details of all such companies with the registrar SC.

The court directed federal government to file comprehensive reply with it till first week of October with regard to prices of medicines and sale of medicines at higher rate.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till first week of October.
