Army vows to continue relief efforts despite threats

QUETTA, SEP 28 (APP) - Pakistan Army’s relief and rescue operation has been geared up, despite incidents of firing by militants on Army teams engaged in relief work.
The ISPR handout issued here on Saturday said that Army continues to provide relief to affected people of Awaran in inaccessible locations.
Lt General Nasser Khan Janjua, Commander Southern Command who is in Awaran visited the affected areas and assured the people of Army’s full support despite all the limitations.
About the relief goods handout read that 30 tons of food items, 2500 tents, 1000 blankets besides huge quantity of medicines and relief goods were distributed on Saturday, in earthquake affected areas including Awaran, Terteej, Malar, Mangoli, Bazdad, and Mashkai:
it further said that miscreants in Mashkai area attacked an Army Unit, which was engaged in relief operation. In other incident, FC troops moving to quake-hit area from Panjgur were attacked by militants as a result 4 Frontier Corps men were killed and two others were injured.
“Such incidents divert part of the troops to be deployed on protection duties rather than relief work for which they arrived in the area.
Distribution of Army’s relief goods taken to Mashkai area to affected people got delayed due to disruption by the militants. However, Army will ensure the distribution of relief goods as soon as possible.
Referring major constrains in the quack-hit area, it said that security situation, lack of local resources, Infrastructure weakness, over-stretched logistic distances; population vastly scattered; Mountainous region, large scale of devastation and aftershocks were hampering relief activities in Awaran and other affected areas.
