Land reforms can lead to green revolution in the country: CJP

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30 (Online): Supreme Court (SC) has ordered federal and provincial governments to give advertisement in the media for inviting applications from the persons who are aspirant to become party in land reforms case.

The court also allowed the farmers to become party in the case.

A 9-member larger bench of SC headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the land reforms case Monday.

CJP remarked during the course of hearing of the case “ land reforms are in the larger interest of the farmers. This is such a case wherein thousands of people can evince interest in opposing and supporting it . Land reforms can bring about green revolution in the country. How much land is lying arid in the country. If it is cultivated, it will on one side afford benefit to the farming community and on other side will bring improvement in national economy”.

Abdul Hafiz Pirzada advocate appeared in the court at the inception of the hearing of the case. Pirzada prayed the court that he wanted to become party in the case on behalf of farmers, therefore, he be allowed.

The court also allowed Pirzada to become party being his plea not opposed by the petitioner Abid Hassan Manto saying “ you are also associated with agriculture

The court observed “ as the matter involves public interest, therefore, it will be better that as to why the advertisement be not given in the newspapers on this count.

Abid Hassan Manto and Abdul Hafiz Pirzada said “who will bear its expenses”.

The court remarked “federal and provincial governments will bear the expenses in this regard. The state owned media can also do this job. Advertisements should be published at least in two newspapers.

The court adjourned the further hearing of the case for two weeks.
